OPUS COMPANY was founded in 2020 in Tampere, Finland. 

At Opus Company we value story. So here is ours.

We had flown from Australia to make it over the Finnish border just before it closed, in the beginning of the pandemic. Like many artists we went through a period of questioning our existence and purpose in the world. We thought about changing careers and starting flower shops.

However, we were not able to let go of our roots. The need to make circus kept bubbling up and we decided to give it another chance. We founded Opus Company in order to create our first official production: Colorsphere in collaboration with our dear friends at Hands some Feet circus Company.

We hope you do not think that we are flippant in nature, we’re actually telling you this to say the opposite. In very uncertain times we decided to double down on the scary thing, the risky thing. It is important for us to remember that in times when culture infrastructures around us are crumbling, we make art by choice. From a need to express and share experiences and in each day of our practice we choose it again and again.

After some delays (one baby) later, we finally premiered Colorsphere in the Autumn of 2023 along with our first installation experiences Babysphere and Lightsphere. We have been very happy and grateful to bring these experiences on tour and have brought joy to over 5000 spectators in total so far.

After spending quite a lot of time focusing on work for young audiences and families we wanted to reinvestigate a more mature expression with our next performance: Suddenly: and other ways to change that premiered in June 2024. This show strikes at the core of what we wish to make more of in the future. Something that questions the realms of circus and isn’t afraid to take sidesteps to other forms. Something that is personal and universal and that speaks about the human experience.

And here we are. Opus Company has started to take form, we think we know what we want and who we are (for now). We are a circus company that works in the spectrums between performance and installation as well as circus and theater.

We care about our community, building and modeling healthy work practices and participating in the development of circus art as a whole. We are interested in stories, scale, textures, humanity, reality and truth. We want to participate in our immediate surroundings, engage in our international community and have meaningful encounters through art.

Next we are developing a new installation, a show with finger puppets, a workshop about circus creation and a new touring circus show.
